Description: A medium sized evergreen shrub known best for its striking red juvenile shoots in the spring making it particularly eye catching. Large leathery glossy leaves on a slightly loose habit
Uses: As a hedge on a leg
Climate/Position: Full sun or partial shade. Some shelter advisable to avoid young shoots being scorched by late frost
Height/Spread: The height will not increase, but the head size will
Soil Requirements: Any soil but must be well drained
Pruning: Train new growth in to the framework, when there are no gaps in the frame then trim annually with topiary shears or hedge-cutters in early or late summer to keep specimen in shape. Suckers and unwanted branches can also be removed from the stems
Special Requirements: Topiary can suffer from Pests & Diseases. Look out for any tell-tale signs such as damaged leaves, adult moths, caterpillars, sooty mould etc., and treat appropriately
