Care Guide

Common name: Christmas berry 'Red Robin'

Family: Rosaceae

Origin: A hybrid of P. glabra x P. serrulata raised and introduced from New Zealand

Description: A medium sized evergreen shrub known best for its striking red juvenile shoots in the spring making it particularly eye catching. Large leathery glossy leaves on a slightly loose habit

Uses: Good for mass planting or can be grown as a hedge. Popular as an easy to grow landscaping plant

Climate/Position: Full sun or partial shade. Some shelter advisable to avoid young shoots being scorched by late frost

Height/Spread: Will grow up to 4 metres x 3 metres though can be kept to 3 metres

Soil Requirements: Any soil but must be well drained

Pruning: Pruning may be done to improve shape or to rejuvenate older plants. Annual pruning in spring if grown as a hedge - the young red shoots will then develop a little later than if unpruned

Special Requirements: Avoid exposed Easterly winds to avoid damage to young growth in spring

Additional Interest: Awarded the RHS AGM
