DIOSPYROS kaki 'Sharon'

Description: Common name: Persimmon. Round fruit, orange in colour that ripen in the autumn. The fruit gets sweeter after picking. The leaves are dark green, shiny, and turn orange in autumn

Uses: Culinary, try to leave the fruit unpicked until late November. Any unpicked fruit left on the tree is good for wildlife

Climate/Position: Plant in a warm sheltered spot

Height/Spread: A medium sized tree of rounded habit. Slow growing up to 7 metres

Soil Requirements: Any reasonably well drained soil

Pruning: No pruning required

Special Requirements: Self-fertile, but yields will be better if more than one tree is grown. Fruiting should start around year 5

Additional Interest: The fruit is a good source of fibre. No need to peel, the skin is a little tougher than an apple, the texture is like an Apricot
