Description:Common name: Magnolia 'Susan'. From mid spring dark burgundy buds open to narrow goblet-shaped flowers which are purple-red on the outside and paler on the inside and each petal is slightly twisted. The fragrant flowers are quite stunning and appear before leaves and amongst the mid green leaves until mid-summer
Uses: An upright magnolia which will make an excellent specimen plant in most gardens
Climate/Position: Full or partial sun avoiding early morning sun, if possible to avoid damage of late frost
Height/Spread: 4 metres x 3 metres
Soil Requirements: Best in a rich deep soil with plenty of moisture and slightly acidic soil though fairly lime tolerant
Pruning: No pruning required. Any shaping of the plant is best done after the plant has finished the main flowering period in late spring
Special Requirements: Mulch in spring to maintain moisture especially on drier soils
Additional Interest: Kosar hybrid of Magnolia which is a cross between M. liliiflora x M. stellata. The genus name honours Pierre Magnol, French botanist (1638-1715)
