Prunus domestica 'Reine-Claude Violette' (PLUM)

Description: Common name: Prunus domestica 'Reine-Claude Violette' (PLUM). Purple Gage, an old variety 1780's that is partially self-fertile

Uses: In the fruit garden, or orchard

Climate/Position: Grow in full sun, the flowers appear in late spring so the site must be free of late frosts

Height/Spread: Will grow up to 4 metres high, depending on rootstock

Soil Requirements: Grow in a well-drained soil

Pruning: Prune to remove dead wood in winter, and to maintain a good airflow to the centre of the tree. Thin the fruits in summer

Special Requirements: Partially self-fertile, but the crop yield will be higher if other Plums, in the same pollination group, are grown nearby

Additional Interest: An old Frech variety, valued for its sweet and rich flavour
